Davida Cohen
Davida is both a jewelry artisan and a massage therapist. She only returned
to making jewelry four years ago after a long absence. She has been doing
massage and bodywork for almost
twelve
years. Her husband, Howard, who is very artistically inclined himself gave her
the confidence and support to delve back into jewelry design and metal work -
this time, however, she found a niche that inspired her to create designs
without the limitations that held her back when he was younger. (Maturing is
Sublime)
There are three universal concepts that are commonly reflected in Davida's
work. They deal primarily with
Nature,
Healing and
Relationships. These concepts have a great impact on Davida's work and life.
Nature
has many organic forms and shapes. It can be conflicting in many
different ways. Sometime it is beautiful, serene, peaceful and awe inspiring and
at other times it can be dangerous, frightening, daunting and forbidding.
Healing is something that we each need in some way or at some point in
time. It is something the earth needs. It is something that mankind needs.
Healing does not always mean curing but the journey itself can open many doors.
Relationships are an integral part of our existence. How we relate, to one
another, to ourselves, our partners, our friends, to nature, to the world, to
our enemies and to God or some higher power outside ourselves, affects every
single moment of every thing in existence.
The metal work that Davida incorporates into her designs is usually a metaphor
portraying some aspect of these universal concepts. Not only is the image of a
spiral considered a universal symbol for
healing, the science and physics of a
spiral force are seen in nature
in many different ways including hurricanes, whirlpools, and tornados.
It
is, likewise, displayed on shells, fossils and certain sea creatures. The spiral
is also seen in the cyclic aspects of our ever changing relationships
to one another, to the earth and to God. Davida feels that
'The Wild Sublime'
is the joy that comes from the
understanding that all is interconnected and that all is ONE. This, in and of itself, is
WILD to fathom
and SUBLIME to experience.
